Igbo Market Days in Igbo Language


The Igbo Market Days

1st market day - Eke (or Ekeh)

 

2nd market day - Orie (or Orieh)

 

3rd market day - Afo (or Afor)

 

4th market day – Nkwo (or Nkwor)



You may have left you wondering how native speakers of the Igbo language say "one day", "one week", "one month", and "one year".

They simply place the cardinal number ofu (=one) before the Igbo words for day, week, month and year, as the following examples show:

One day

Ofu ubochi

 

 

One week

Ofu izuuka

 

 

One month

Ofu onwa

 

 

One year

Ofu afo

Ndia no n'ahia. Aha ahia ahu bu Eke.
O na-azu kwa ubochi Eke.

Onitsha nwere otu nnuku ahia a na-akpo Otu Onitsha.

Otu onitsha na-azu kwa ubochi.
Obodo taunship di iche iche nwere ahia na-azu kwa ubochi.
Aha ahia di n'ala Igbo di ano.
Ha bu Eke, Orie, Afor, Nkwo.

N'obodo ufodu, e nwere nke uku na nke nta.
Iji ma atu, e nwere Eke-Ukwu, Orie-Ukwu,Afor-Ukwu, Eke-nta,Afor-nta Nkwo-nta.
Ndi Igbo maara otu e si azu ahia.

Some people are in the market place. This place is Eke market. It takes place on Eke market day. There is a market which takes place everyday.

Onitsha town has one big market called Otu Onitsha. The market takes place everyday.

Different Township has market place that takes place everyday. There are four different market types in Igbo land. These are Eke, Orie, Afor and Nkwo. In some places, there are big markets and small markets.

For example, there are Eke-ukwu (Big Eke), Orie-Ukwu (Big Orie), Afor-Ukwu (Big Eke), Eke-nta (Small Eke), Afor-nta (Small Afor) and Nkwo-nta (Small Nkwo).

Igbo people knows how to trades in the market.
